As I turned to the Scriptures one draggy, hollow-feeling morning, I was searching for a steadying hand and a word to give purpose for just doing the next thing. My own strength is rarely sufficient to get me out of bed. I read Psalm 46, and my heart was refreshed by the picture of a river – and God’s presence in the city (i.e. among His people).
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has brought desolations on the earth.
He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Mother, God is your refuge, your strength, your very present help in time of trouble. He is your refuge more than “me-time” or vacation, he is your strength more than “will power” and blackest morning coffee, he is your help when your husband is not or cannot be. Though unthinkable chaos surrounds the earth and your life, even when you see alarming things happening, don’t fear. Though your savings evaporate as quickly as your free time, though you sometimes can’t remember who you thought you were – there are calm, life-giving waters in God’s city, among His people. He makes provision for His people. God is in the midst of His people. He is in your very midst! In your home, with you when your heart is overwhelmed in the chaos of toddlers and smashed cheerios and dreams that feel lost and unfulfilled. You are secure. Look at all that He has done, and let it build your faith. God makes wars to cease on the earth! Even wars inside of selfish, wandering hearts and wars between children who (like their parents!) hate to share. He breaks every weapon that is aimed against you, against your marriage. He is God! He will be exalted among the nations, exalted in the earth, exalted in your home, in your family. He is with you. He is your safety and security.
